Summer has barely started, but are you and your military friends all ready to say “Mooooooom….I’m bored!”? Before you say that, check out these fun things that you can do at military bases and posts all over. Best of all, these activities aren’t very expensive. In fact, if you save your allowance money for a little while, you can even treat Mom or Dad to an afternoon of fun!
Water Parks Are the Way to Go: Nearly every base or post has a swimming pool, but did you know that some even have actual water parks? It’s true! If you’re stationed in the Northeast, you can visit Frog Falls at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. A fun day in the water will only cost military ID card holders $5. Venture further down south to Fort Jackson, South Carolina and you can play at Palmetto Falls for just $4.50.
Hayrides and Horses: Are you stationed in Colorado Springs, CO? If so, round up 20 kids from your neighborhood and enjoy a hayride for $5 per person! The Equestrian Center at the United States Air Force Academy also offers trail rides and horseback riding lessons (more than $5). Check them out for lots of summer fun.
Go-Karts Galore: Don’t ever say there’s nothing fun to do at Fort Polk, Louisiana! At Klubs and Karts you and two buddies (and parents, of course) can take a spin on the Go-Kart track for $5 each. Joint Base Langley-Eustis, among other places, also offers Go Karts, as well as Batting Cages, where you practice your major league skills and hit 100 balls for $5.
Putt Putt, Pretty Please: Tiki Island at Marine Corps Base Hawaii offers up some awesome mini golfing when you’re looking to do something fun! At $5.25 per person, it’s waaaay cheaper than 18 holes at a “full sized” golf course!
Bowling Buddies: Want to beat the heat? Why not go bowling with your favorite military friends? A bowling alley is to a military base as apple pie is to America! Many installations offer great deals on daytime bowling for kids during the summer. The best price we found? 50-cent games, shoes, and hotdogs at Naval Station Norfolk! What a deal!
Lights…Camera…Action! What’s better than a night at the movies? A night at the movies that doesn’t cost Mom and Dad a fortune! Lots of military bases still have movie theaters, and you can see all the newest blockbusters, plus some classics, for a great price. Most military movie tickets are between $2 and $5, even for a 3D show, like at MCAGCC Twentynine Palms. With a $2 ticket, you might even have some money left over for popcorn.
This summer, you can have lots of fun without spending lots of money. Parks, playgrounds, and libraries are fun and free activities too. Ask your parents to find out what’s going on at your nearest installation. And if you find something awesome -and cheap- to do, let us know!
